¿Qué son las segundas víctimas?

Las segundas víctimas son los profesionales sanitarios que se ven involucrados en un evento adverso no previsto, un error médico y/o un daño sufrido por el paciente, y se convierten en víctimas en el sentido de que quedan traumatizados por el evento.Es frecuente que se crean personalmente responsables de lo que le ha sucedido al paciente. Muchos sienten como si le hubieran fallado, cuestionándose sus habilidades clínicas y conocimientos (Scott et al 2009).

La primera víctima es el paciente afectado, la segunda el profesional implicado y la tercera, la institución en la que se ha producido el evento adverso: todos necesitan tomar medidas para paliar los efectos adversos, resolverlos lo mejor posible y prevenir que vuelvan a producirse.

Second victims

Second victims are healthcare providers who are involved in an unanticipated adverse patient event, in a medical error and/or a patient related injury and become victimized in the sense that the provider is traumatized by the event. Frequently, these individuals feel personally responsible for the patient outcome. Many feel as though they have failed the patient, second guessing their clinical skills and knowledge base.
